Winter Ready: Ready Your Home for the Freezing chilly Months

Posted on November 27, 2024 by team in restoration | Comments (0)

Winter is here

As winter has landed in our laps here in Calgary, we need to take proactive steps to protect our homes from the harsh elements that come with the season. Making your home winter ready ensures your comfort but also helps you save on energy bills and prevents potential damage. Below are 10 helpful tips to prepare your home for the cold season ahead.

As winter has landed in our laps here in Calgary, we need to take proactive steps to protect our homes from the harsh elements that come with the season

Inspect & Seal Windows & Doors.

Cold air can easily seep in through gaps and cracks in windows and doors. Inspect them for any leaks and seal gaps with weather stripping or caulk. Consider adding draft stoppers to the bottoms of doors to prevent cold drafts from entering.  Something simple like that can dramatically cut down on winter heating costs. This will go a long way to make your home winter ready!

Check & Insulate Attic & Walls.

Adequate insulation is crucial for retaining heat in your home. Check your attic and walls for proper insulation and add more if necessary. This not only keeps your home warmer but also reduces heating costs. Also be sure to check the attic hatch for the seal.  If that is broken or missing you are losing a lot of heat not to mention potential for mold growth from humidity gaining access to your attic.  Ewwwww!

Service Your Heating System.

Before the cold weather sets in, have your heating system professionally serviced. Missed out on doing this before the snow, no stress, call today.  No time like the present to have your furnace serviced.  Look to replace air filters, check for leaks, and ensure that your heating system is in good working condition. This proactive measure can prevent unexpected breakdowns during the winter.

Prepare Emergency Kits.

Be prepared for power outages or unexpected winter storms by creating an emergency kit. Include essentials like flashlights, batteries, blankets, non-perishable food, water, and a first aid kit. Ensure everyone in your household knows where the kit is located.

Reverse Ceiling Fans.

Most ceiling fans have a reverse setting that pushes warm air down. In the winter, set your ceiling fans to rotate clockwise at a low speed. This helps distribute warm air more evenly throughout the room.

Clear Gutters & Downspouts.

Remove leaves, debris, rogue baseballs, tennis balls and any blockages from your gutters and downspouts. This prevents ice dams from forming and ensures proper drainage. Clogged gutters can lead to water damage, so it’s essential to keep them clear.

Chimney & Fireplace Maintenance.

If you have a fireplace, ensure it’s in good working order. Have your chimney cleaned and inspected to prevent the buildup of creosote, which can be a fire hazard. Stock up on firewood and make sure your fireplace tools are easily accessible.

Protect Pipes from Freezing.

Frozen pipes can burst and cause significant damage. Insulate exposed pipes, especially those in unheated areas like basements and crawl spaces. Disconnect and drain garden hoses and consider installing freeze-proof outdoor faucets.

Exterior Maintenance.

Trim overgrown branches that could potentially fall on your home during winter storms. Inspect your roof for damaged shingles and make any necessary repairs. Clean and store outdoor furniture to protect it from the elements.

Roof Maintenance.

A well-maintained roof is essential for protecting a home from winter weather. Inspect your roof for loose or damaged shingles, as well as clear debris such as leaves and branches. It’s crucial to address any issues promptly to prevent water leaks and potential structural damage during snow and ice accumulation.

Putting it all together and make your home winter ready

By taking the time to make your home winter ready, you not only ensure a warm and comfortable living space but also protect your property from potential damage. These simple yet effective tips will help you weather the cold months with ease and peace of mind. By focusing on insulation, roof and gutter maintenance, pipe winterization, heating system inspections, and emergency preparedness, you can ensure your home remains resilient in the face of winter weather. So, roll up your sleeves, get started, and embrace winter with a cozy and well-prepared home!  Have questions? Reach out to Amity Environmental at (403) 667-8264! We are here to help!
