Have you ever wondered what happens to asbestos when it leaves your home? We are held to some pretty strict guidelines to ensure that the waste is dealt with in a safe and contained manner.
It all starts with how we bag up and seal your asbestos-containing waste. Every bag is double-bagged which is a very important step! Firstly, waste is placed in a 6-mil thick yellow bag containing all the proper safety warnings and labels. Then, it is placed inside of a second 6-mil thick clear bag. Each bag is goosenecked and duct taped to seal all the contents inside. We double bag as a safety precaution to protect everyone and the local area in the case that there is a small hole in one of the bags.
The next step is to wash and wipe them down to make sure that any dust stays inside of the containment we built. Once those squeaky clean bags are loaded into our trucks we are off to the landfill with them.
How does the landfill deal with our bags?
Can we go to ANY city of Calgary landfill? The short answer is: NO! Asbestos is only accepted at the Shepard landfill in the city. Did you know that there are three city landfills that accept household waste? Calgary residents can take residential waste, household chemicals and some recyclables to any of The City’s three sanitary landfill sites: Spyhill, Shepard and East Calgary.
Do you think we can just show up to the Calgary landfill and dump them all willy-nilly? NOPE! We have to book an appointment with the city and make a plan with them because asbestos must be processed in a way to keep all fibers locked away. We arrive for our pre-scheduled appointment and are escorted to our dump site after showing our proper safety documentation and donning all of the proper personal protective equipment. A freshly dug hole has been made available for us at our appointment time.
Once we back our trailer into proper position, we offload the bags all at once and ensure to keep them close together and in a neat pile inside the hole. Then the city buries the bags with fresh dirt to keep all the asbestos containing material in its forever grave.
We exit the landfill and pay the bill and are off on our next adventure. Simple right? All in a days work.
We love what we do, and nothing gives us more joy than seeing those perfect little yellow bags covered in dirt. We can help you anytime with your asbestos needs.
