If you’re familiar with our blog, you’ve probably heard us talk a lot about needing good ventilation in your home. Ventilation serves many purposes. It prevents water vapour from condensing on surfaces, it exchanges humid indoor air with dryer outdoor air, and can even help prevent allergies and illness.
In the summer, people often leave their windows open. This provides their home with better circulation and airs out the house. During the winter, your house actually requires this air exchange even more than it does in summer, but because of the cold most people neglect to do it. Many people think that society catches more colds and flus during the winter season because of the cold, but it’s actually from being cooped up with stale air. To reduce your chances of mould and illness, here is an easy way to air out your home.
At least once a day – just after drying laundry and cooking is the best time – open your house’s windows. If you can open a roof window, the air will change even faster, but if you don’t have one, that’s fine too. You want to create a clear draft going through your house. Leave the windows open for at least 5 minutes – 10 minutes is better. If the room begins to cool significantly, probably enough air has been exchanged, and you can close everything up again.
We hope that by airing out your home daily, you will reduce mould growth and the spread of illness. However, if you do have mould beginning to grow or if you have any questions, give Amity Environmental a call at (403) 667-8264.
